Build a rainy-afternoon shortlist that isn't just cafés

Give a free afternoon somewhere to goFor a wet October afternoon, collect three nearby indoor places where you would genuinely spend time. This is a personal shortlist, not a promise that every place is free or open. Check the venue's own information before adding it.

A place to read without rushing Consider a public library reading room, if one is available locally. Note whether visitors need a card for entry or only for borrowing. Describe the seating and noise level you actually observed, and record when you checked the opening hours.
A place to look closely Choose a small gallery, local history display, or community exhibition. Check admission and booking requirements on its official page. Pick one reason to go slowly, such as a single display case, rather than promising a whole afternoon's entertainment.
A place to make something Look for an advertised drop-in session at a community space. Record age limits, materials, price, and whether booking is required. Do not treat a makerspace as freely available equipment; access and supervision rules belong to the venue.
Add the practical difference Compare the three places by journey time, spending required, and how spontaneous the visit can be. Include a checked access information link. A short factual distinction is more useful than giving every place five stars.
Choose a backup and a check date Put your first choice and one backup at the top. Date the shortlist and recheck hours before leaving, especially around closures or events. Share the venue links, not a photograph of another visitor enjoying the space.
Make one of your own

Put what you know, your stories, or your favorite things into cards. Share them with a link anyone can open, no account needed.
