The spare chair — a small October story

A place that hasn't been claimedThis is an original fictional story, not a report of a real household. Read it one card at a time. It begins with an ordinary chair and a Saturday plan that never quite became a plan.

The invitation stayed unfinished Mara typed Dinner on Saturday? and left the message unsent. October had filled the calendar without making much happen. Across the kitchen stood the extra chair she kept moving out of the way, as if it belonged to a more sociable version of her life.
A practical reason to call Her neighbor asked to borrow a measuring tape. Mara found it in a drawer with three dead pens and an old takeaway menu. When he arrived, she nearly apologized for the kitchen. Instead she asked whether he wanted to sit while she untangled the tape.
No special occasion appeared They talked about the shelf he was fitting, then about a book neither had finished. There was no meal, only water in two different glasses. Mara noticed that the chair was not especially comfortable. It was, however, already doing its job.
The message became smaller After he left, she returned to the unsent invitation. Dinner suddenly sounded like a project. She changed it to Come over for half an hour on Saturday? We can decide about food later. Then she sent it before inventing a reason to wait.
The chair stayed where it was On Saturday, her friend arrived with bread and no plan. The extra chair scraped the floor in exactly the same way it always had. Nothing in the kitchen had improved. Only the question of whether someone could sit there had finally been answered.
