A home watch list for the 2026 Perseids
A night worth making room forThe Perseid meteor shower is expected to be strongest overnight on August 12 into August 13, 2026, close to a new moon. Weather and local light still decide what you can see, so this is a watch list rather than a promise. Check the boxes that make sense for your home, then give the sky some unhurried time.

Save the right night
Keep late August 12 and the early hours of August 13 open, then check a current local forecast before you set up. A clear hour on either side of the predicted peak can be more rewarding than waiting under clouds for an exact minute.

Choose a familiar open view
Use a yard, balcony, or other place you already know is safe after dark. Look for the widest patch of sky you can get without climbing onto a roof or entering an unfamiliar area. You do not need a telescope.

Make nearby light optional
Notice porch lamps, windows, and phone screens that shine into your view. Turn off only the lights you control, close a curtain behind you, and keep a small red or very dim light for moving around safely.

Bring a view that saves your neck
A reclining chair, camping pad, or folded blanket lets you look at a large part of the sky without craning upward. Add one light layer even on a warm evening; sitting still often feels cooler than expected.

Pack a quiet night kit
Set out water, a timer, and a small tray or bag for anything you carry outside. Binoculars narrow the view and usually are not useful for spotting meteors, so leave them indoors unless you also plan to look at the Moon or stars.

Give your eyes thirty minutes
Let your eyes settle into the dark and scan broadly rather than staring at one point. Put the phone face down after the weather check. If nothing appears right away, the waiting is part of the watch, not a failed attempt.

Leave one honest record
Before you go inside, note the time, cloud cover, how long you watched, and what you actually saw — even if the count is zero. One photo of the setup and one sentence about the night make a record you can compare with the next shower.
